Motors turn over, gears crank, and steam engines burst to life on the third Sunday of every month when MOTAT fire up a range of impressive machines from their collection, celebrating New Zealand’s history of transport and technology. This March, Live day will showcase the Military collection with a host of interactive activities, displays, and more. There will be face painting, model displays, armoury activities, flyovers, and the popular Military Rides will be in operation. As will all the usual live day favourites including Little Flick mini fire-engine rides, the Blacksmith working in the forge, tram rides, and lolly-making demonstrations.  All this and more as part of your normal MOTAT admission.

Pasifika Vibes @ MOTAT

MOTAT is collaborating with the Auckland Museum, Art Gallery and Maritime Museum to celebrate Pacific culture, rhythms and flavours with Pasifika Vibes, an event running alongside the annual Pasifika Festival in Western Springs. Bring the whole family along to chill out with great music, succulent food and live entertainment. Sit back and relax while the DJ spins the tunes and the SAINTZUP Performing Arts Trust (SUPA) showcase the talent of their young performers. MOTAT is also showcasing the story of the Solents, New Zealand’s flying boats which traversed the Coral Route of the Pacific. The beauty of the Pacific is highlighted in MOTAT’s pictorial collection, with images from Samoa, Tahiti, Fiji and more. Popular Māori food truck, Pūhā & Pākehā, will be on-site serving up their unique blend of contemporary Māori street food or you could grab a woodfired pizza with a pacific twist from the team at Napoli Central. So be sure to pop in, enjoy the entertainment and sample the kai on offer, there will be vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options as well a selection of hot and cold drinks from MOTAT’s own café car.

*Please note: this is a smoke and alcohol-free event and only the event village will be open to the public. The MOTAT exhibition halls and rest of the Museum will not be open over these days.

‘Dig It’ is an engaging construction themed event for the Museum’s young visitors, offering a variety of interactive activities encouraging them to experiment and explore with various concepts, materials, and interactives. Kids will have the opportunity to operate the real thing with Doug the Digger. There will be a construction zone, a craft activity, and a fun trail for exploring the MOTAT collection. An ideal day of fun and educational activities to keep children entertained over the Easter break.

Super STEM Fair

This family day out gives visitors the chance to experience a variety of exciting projects currently being worked on by the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) community and meet the specialists expanding New Zealand’s boundaries in these fields. Kiwis are often at the forefront of STEM advances and are continuously making solid contributions to the world with their subject knowledge. Come along and be inspired by the expertise and hands-on activities created by leading scientists and technologists from tertiary institutions and industries such as: Auckland, Canterbury and Massey Universities, the Institute of Environmental Science and Research, Mindkits and The Mind Lab by Unitec. Auckland’s own Slime Princess, 11-year old Katharina Weischede, will be there demonstrating the science behind her hugely popular slime products. The range of interactive exhibits includes robotics, virtual reality proteins, ultrasound research, forensic science, steganography and so much more.

Ready, Steady, Go! Holiday Experience

Race through the school holidays with MOTAT’s “Ready, Steady, Go!” holiday experience. Jump into the fast lane to explore all the ways to travel. This experience gets back to the basics by looking at the most fundamental element of transportation – getting from A to B! Test your design skills by building and customising the cardboard body of a radio-controlled car and then race your creation in the action-packed Turbodrome on a purpose-built track. See marbles cascading down a giant, custom-made marble run and then have a go at building your own with magnetic boards. Make time for a pitstop and create your own weird and wonderful vehicle on the magnetic wall or participate in the transport-themed fun and games on offer.

There is no better time to experience MOTAT than at one of the Museum’s regular Live Days. See MOTAT’s operational collection come to life every third Sunday of the month with a great range of family activities included as part of your normal MOTAT admission. This month Live Day focuses on the historic Village with its cluster of picturesque cottages, quaint chapel and beautiful gardens reminding us of days gone by. Favourite Live Day activities include rides on heritage trams, Little Flick the mini fire engine, a steam train and military vehicles. Visitors can also watch the Black Smith in full swing in the forge as well as the old-fashioned Lolly-man and Bread maker plying their trades.
