A New Setting Exhibition: Makyla Curtis and the MOTAT Print shop

This unique exhibition combines poetry and print, and profiles the work of MOTAT volunteer, Makyla Curtis. The exhibition displays her hand-set, limited-edition prints of contemporary New Zealand poetry, including works by 2017 NZ Poet Laureate Selina Tusitala Marsh. These beautiful artworks were created by Curtis and the other volunteers in the MOTAT Print Shop. Also featured is a special type case developed by Curtis for the MOTAT print shop that enables the printing of Te Reo Māori.

Bikes, Bands & BBQs

Summer is almost upon us and what better way to celebrate than a Sunday BBQ! Join MOTAT this November for a day of fun in the spirit of summer and transport. Admire the impressive display of motorbikes from a range of local clubs, tap your toes to a selection of great live bands, enjoy a bite to eat from the Bite Me catering BBQ, or relax in the Village beer garden with a cold drink. Start your summer early with Bikes, Bands and BBQs this November at MOTAT.

MOTAT Live Day: Trams

Jump aboard and celebrate with the Museum as the MOTAT Tramway approaches its 50th Anniversary of operation. This month MOTAT’s Live Day will be all about trams. Explore the Tram Workshop, learn about the Heritage Tram collection, and ride the Tramway. All the favourite MOTAT Live Day regulars will also be in operation, including Little Flick mini fire-engine rides, the Print Shop in action and the Blacksmith working in the forge, along with many other activities all included as part of your normal MOTAT admission. There’s no better time to explore the Museum than during the Live Day experience.

Time Travellers Convention

Embark on a nostalgic journey back in time with the Museum’s Time Travellers’ Convention. Stop off in different eras for a taste of its unique technologies, fashion and food while enjoying the music of decades past at MOTAT. There will be a vintage market amongst the 1950’s street scape, games and a Beatrix Potter story time in the Historic Village, fashion shows, live jazz, and more. Explore the regular MOTAT favourites, enjoy a tasty morsel from Bite Me catering or the Cropper House café. A perfect Sunday activity for the whole family to enjoy.

Brick and Blocks

Even in the digital age, these iconic small coloured blocks have remained more popular than ever with fans of all ages. This December the Auckland LEGO® User Group returns to MOTAT, treating kids, hobbyists, collectors, and enthusiasts alike to an impressive display of intricate creations. Located in the contemporary innovation space, The Idea Collective, visitors can also create their own masterpieces in the build and bash zone. Be inspired, get creative and indulge in a day of design thinking fun at MOTAT.

Good Old Days: 1930

Journey back through time and celebrate the innovations of our past with MOTAT’s Good Old Days event series. The first Wednesday of each month focuses on a new decade from 1900 to the 1980’s, exhibiting the technologies of the period, and supported by the music and food of each era. This December, join MOTAT in celebrating the 1930’s with live Jazz, dancing displays and lessons, silent films, oral histories, a Christmas photo booth and post box, and more!  A great mid-week activity and day out.

Changing Gear Exhibition Opens

Changing Gear explores the history of cycling in New Zealand, the growing place of cycling in our cities and towns, and showcases some of the innovations in the world of bikes, from the high tech to the quirky! For 200 years, we have adapted the bicycle to suit our needs and in turn it has helped shape the world around us. With plentiful interactives and digital experiences, this exhibition investigates fascinating elements of our history, and examines how cycling is changing and growing in New Zealand.

Christmas Lights at MOTAT

It’s almost that time of year again when MOTAT is bedazzled with fairy lights and opens its gates for ten enchanted evenings in the build up to Christmas. The Museum will be bustling with festive activities including movies and carols that are sure to get you into the spirit of the season. Escape the holiday chaos with an evening amongst friends and family in a fairy-lit wonderland capturing the magical atmosphere of Christmas. Don’t miss your chance to catch up with Santa, visit Mrs Claus’s Kitchen, enjoy the festive fare and much more. All proceeds go towards buying gifts for the Auckland City Mission and Auckland Women’s Refuge. Get ready for this holiday season by soaking up some Christmas cheer at MOTAT this December.

On Ya Bike Holiday Experience

This month not only will visitors to MOTAT get to explore an exciting new cycling exhibition, Changing Gear, but they will also have the chance to investigate the weird and wacky side of this mode of transport while delving into the underlying scientific principles that govern the bicycle. This summer holiday experience includes a high energy live show, an interactive multi-user circular bicycle installation and a series of common bike maintenance demonstrations and “hacks”. Cycling has a long history in New Zealand, it’s valuable to our communities and plays an important role in the future our city. Bring the whole family along to MOTAT these holidays, get involved and be inspired to climb “on ya bike”.
